165 million children worldwide suffer from developmental disorders, which can often be traced back to chronic malnutrition and undernutrition in early childhood (Source: Unicef, 2022 ). Access to nutritious meals is not only essential for survival, but also promotes the long-term physical and mental development of children. This begins in the womb and during breastfeeding, so it is important to ensure adequate nutrition for mothers as well.
The number of people affected by acute food insecurity and in urgent need of food and livelihood assistance is increasing. Countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are particularly affected (source: Global Report on Food Crisis, 2023 ). We are therefore jointly supporting nutrition projects in Somalia and Nepal.
Somalia is located on the Horn of Africa. The country is currently suffering from a number of mutually reinforcing crises: extreme weather, such as long-term droughts or flash floods, ongoing conflicts and, most recently, the Covid-19 pandemic. These are dramatically exacerbating the hunger situation in Somalia. A total of 8.3 million people in Somalia suffer from hunger (source: Food and Agricultural Organisation, 2023 ). Children are particularly affected.
The country in southern Asia is the highest country in the world on average. In addition to the Himalayas, Nepal is also characterized by rural, remote areas with poor infrastructure, poverty and high food insecurity. Children in particular suffer from malnutrition: over 26% of children are affected by chronic malnutrition (stunted growth) (Source: Food and Agricultural Organization, 2023 ).
