Ensuring the supply of drinking water

A safe water supply is essential for a healthy life. However, not everyone in the world has the opportunity or access to clean drinking water. Sometimes the necessary infrastructure is lacking, for example in rural areas, or the necessary knowledge to repair valuable wells. An improved drinking water supply prevents the spread of diseases transmitted through unclean water, which are among the main causes of child and maternal mortality. For the people in the region, clean water not only means fewer illnesses and therefore more frequent school attendance, but also a generally improved quality of life.

Where we help

Water is the basis of life and that is precisely why everyone needs and should have access to clean drinking water. To advance this, we have joined forces with our partners in Kenya and Sierra Leone.

Why Kenya

17 million Kenyans in rural areas do not have access to a basic water supply and about half of them (8 million) rely on surface water for their drinking water needs (source: FundiFix ). Unclean water can be particularly dangerous for children, as they are more susceptible to infectious diseases and diarrhea. A good and intact infrastructure is necessary for a comprehensive supply of clean drinking water. In Kenya, this infrastructure already exists, but is not intact everywhere and therefore needs to be repaired.

Why Sierra Leone

The country, weakened by civil war and Ebola, suffers from destroyed or missing infrastructure. In addition to economic and structural difficulties, the population in Sierra Leone also struggles with the insecure food situation. This is the main reason for chronic malnutrition in the population. In addition, the country struggles with one of the highest child and maternal mortality rates in the world. Reasons for these high rates include diarrheal diseases, which are due to the lack of access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Together with our partner organizations in Kenya and Sierra Leone, we have set ourselves clear goals. These must be achieved in order to give as many people there as possible access to clean drinking water.

We have teamed up with those who are experts in helping around the world: verified national and international aid organizations. We trust them because we can see exactly how they use the money. This way we can be sure that our help reaches the right people.

Through repairs to intact water infrastructure

FundiFix monitors the pipelines, hand pumps and water points in several regions of Kenya and repairs them when necessary.

Reliable access to water also means shorter distances to the nearest well and a lower risk of contracting diseases spread through contaminated water. Join us and help us and FundiFix to rebuild and maintain the water infrastructure in the project region.

By analyzing the weak points in the water infrastructure, FundiFix can target repair work and resources. Constant system monitoring enables data-based decisions to be made, reducing the average repair time for wells and hand pumps from one month to 1 to 3 days.

FundiFix

FundiFix is a Kenyan social enterprise founded by Oxford University in 2014. Its main goal is to maintain and repair the country's water infrastructure in order to provide the population with clean drinking water.

Repairing wells in Sierra Leone

Our partner Action Against Hunger repairs wells and helps the newly founded WASH committees (water, sanitation and hygiene) by providing training so that they can repair and maintain the wells independently.

In the Action Against Hunger project in Sierra Leone, several wells are being repaired. It is not only the reliable availability of water that is important, but also its quality. The WASH committees therefore ensure that this is checked regularly.

Action against hunger

Action Against Hunger has been active in Sierra Leone since 1991 and works with the country to build sustainable livelihoods. This includes the treatment of malnourished children and access to clean water.
