How school meals promote class attendance

Education is one of the most sustainable forms of development cooperation, but not every child has the opportunity to attend school. Families are often unable to provide their children with school materials or to do without an important worker, as children are involved in daily work in many families. In order to increase the number of children attending classes and to break the cycle of hunger, poverty and malnutrition, school meals are an important aid - especially in structurally weak countries.

Where we help

The number of countries in which children do not have regular access to school is overwhelming. To take a first step and provide help, we support our project partners in their work in Afghanistan and Malawi.

Why Afghanistan
Why Afghanistan

Since the Taliban seized power, the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan has worsened. Due to the economic situation and extreme weather conditions, 22.8 million people, more than half the population, do not have enough to eat and the country is on the verge of economic collapse. Women and children are particularly hard hit.

Why Malawi
Why Malawi

The small country, located in southeastern Africa, has a population of over 20 million, a large proportion of whom live in poverty and hunger.

Neither Malawi's economy nor its education and health systems are designed to cope with the already high and ever-increasing population density. At present, 18% of the population is considered undernourished. This has serious consequences for young children, as their growth is often delayed due to chronic malnutrition.

What we want to achieve in 2023

We want to make a difference together and help as many people as possible. That is why we set ourselves clear and ambitious goals with our local partner organizations right from the start. This of course also applies in Afghanistan and Malawi.

How we work

We have teamed up with those who are experts in helping around the world: verified national and international aid organizations. We trust them because we can see exactly how they use the money. This way we can be sure that our help reaches the right people.

In Afghanistan, WFP runs a comprehensive school meal program. The teams work with bakeries to prepare nutritious meals using local ingredients. This not only provides food for schoolchildren, but also supports local agricultural production.
