Germany, one of the richest countries in the world, is facing an often overlooked problem: food poverty. While supermarket shelves are overflowing and tons of food is wasted, many people do not have sufficient access to healthy food. This hidden form of poverty affects a surprisingly broad section of society - from single parents to pensioners to low-income families. Currently, around 3 million people in Germany cannot afford a healthy diet and are affected by food poverty.
Food poverty in Germany has various causes, including low pensions and salaries, long-term unemployment, chronic diseases, inflation and insufficient support for refugees or single parents. However, there are a number of organizations and initiatives that want to change this.
